Although GIF stands for Graphics Interchange Format there has been some controversy over the correct pronunciation of the word GIF. Is it GIF as in ‘gift’ or GIF as in ‘jif’? Basically, it is a file format just like .jpg or .png and is most commonly used to display short moving images. Either way it is essentially a digital flipbook of images cycling through a stack of images on a loop. They have become a communication tool in the same way emoji have been added to language over recent years. CLO: Students will use the design cycle by researching, brainstorming, creating ideas for a .GIF using still images, frames & layers in photoshop. WHAT ARE YOU LEARNING? I will be able to use Photoshop frames & layers to create a short video loop from still images. HOW WILL I KNOW YOU GET IT? By creating an GIF using images converted into frames/layers in photoshop and set on a loop. Students will use the design cycle to brainstorm, sketch, create and revise their ideas, and will talk about their decisions with peers. WHY IS IT IMPORTANT? There is a growing tendency of internet users to use a GIF to convey a message. If a picture is worth a thousand words, surely a short video is worth a million? GIF culture ties into popular culture. Animated GIFs are used to convey complex emotions in an online world of abbreviations (LOL, LMAO, ROFL). They’re also a way of demonstrating an understanding of popular culture, with a huge number being clips from TV shows. Once considered juvenile and unprofessional, GIFs are now a fully accepted, often essential tool of social media and social media marketing. Furthermore, they are immediately eye-catching and easily shareable across multiple social networks. Whether you are already a seasoned designer or simply search for your GIFs from search engines, animated GIFs can add value to your brand and show off your personality.
